The Basement

The basement is the saving grace for this house...without it, we would be really cramped! I'm not totally finished arranging and organizing things, but I've finally gotten all of the boxes out of here. This is where the girls spend the majority of their time, and I am so thankful for this space!

This is the view from the top of the staircase, looking down into the basement. The cedar chest on the right belonged to my great-grandmother, and is filled with blankets. This is the coldest room in the house, so it's nice to have something to cover up with when we are watching a movie or reading down here. Rob built the small bookcases that were previously in our toy room, and they fit perfectly on either side of the fireplace. And speaking of the fireplace, I don't plan for the stuff on the mantel to stay there, my goal was just to get it out of a box. Ideally, I would like to frame some photos of the kids to mount on the wall above the mantel. If you turn a bit to the left, you will see the wall of windows. There are four windows along that wall, and I love to have the sun shining in...I *might* be able to survive winter here, as long as we have sunshine! That is also the wall that we put the play kitchen, Bo's ride on toys, and the buckets of toys on.If you are standing where the fireplace is, you are directly across the room from the desk. I have my sewing maching set up here, and the white bin to the right of the desk holds fabric, 'in progress' projects, and extra materials. The bookcase to the left of the desk was built by Rob's dad, and has been in several different rooms over the last 8 years. When we moved the hutch to the kitchen, I had to find an alternative to hold all of the craft supplies that were inside of it. I think once I organize it, this bookcase will be the perfect solution! If you are sitting at the desk, facing towards the fireplace, this is the view. It is hard to tell in pictures, but this room is a pretty good size. It is larger than our living room was in San Angelo, so there is plenty of room for the kids to play down here. Rob and I have also gotten good use out of this room, using it in the mornings to exercise. Rob has started the P90X system, and is fortunate to be able to do his workout here in the mornings instead of going into work for PT. I have started back up on the 30 Day Shred, and we have enough time in the mornings for me to do the workout (it's only 20 minutes) while the kids play down here, and then we get dressed to take Brooke to schoool. To the right of the staircase is a small hallway...the first door on the right is Sarge's room (really just the storage space under the staircase, but his kennel fits perfectly in there, so Rob gave him the room), the second door on the right is a bathroom, the door directly in front is the unfinished portion of the basement (which includes the laundry room), and the door to the left is a bedroom (you can't really see the doorway in this picture, but Rob's pull-up bar is attached to it-that black thing hanging just below the ceiling). Wow-how is that for a long run-on sentence? Bethany cracks me up, smiling sweetly on the stairs-she snuck into my picture!
The girls are pretty much the only ones that use this bathroom. I do have artwork to hang in here, but it has to be above freezing outside for me to go digging around in the garage to find the hammer and nails.
Bethany keeps calling this her bedroom, but I'm pretty sure she would freak out if we tried to make her sleep down here alone! The closet is filled with more toys, extra linens and pillows, and random camera equipment. I don't think we'll be getting any surprise visitors, so instead of keeping this closet open for guests luggage, clothing, etc, we filled the space up.
We also filled up the window seat area with all of the odd shaped plastic toys that wouldn't fit well anywhere else. I have at least 3 or 4 more boxes of toys to unpack, but they are somewhere in the garage. I'm considering not even bringing them into the house, and donating the stuff instead...the girls haven't asked about them, so they must not be missing anything important (you know, because toys are so important to begin with!).
This is quickly becoming one of my favorite rooms in the house!
